Louis Smith wows crowd at Borders event
Ann Arbor
local jazz legend and UMAP client, Louis Smith accompanied by UMAP
music therapist, Lynn Chenoweth, wowed a crowd of over 125 at
Borders on Sunday, April 6th, when he sang songs such as "Swing Low
Sweet Chariot" – the traditional version and Dizzy Gillespie’s
"Swing Low Sweet Cadillac" version and "On the Sunny Side of the
Street." The afternoon "Meet and Greet" began with an overview of
UMAP’s history and services by Dr. Joanne Pierson, associate
director. This was followed by a wonderful telling of Louis’
history as a trumpet man by his wife of 31 years, LuLu. LuLu told
the story of a neighbor complaining about Louis’ horn playing when
he was just a boy; and his mother’
s response was
for him to just continue practicing. Given Louis’ great career that
was advice well taken. The audience, made up of old friends, former
students, and current UMAP clients and staff, was able to talk with
Louis and LuLu afterwards and have CDs signed. It was a festive
afternoon celebrating Louis and his achievements and UMAP is
grateful that he, LuLu, and Borders earmarked the proceeds to go to
UMAP "to show support for the program that has helped him in his
recovery process."
